Geometric chandeliers, Jali-patterned sconces, and minimalist pendants — a bespoke decorative lighting scheme bridging modern architecture with Islamic sacred tradition.
Within the sharply geometric and spiritually evocative spaces of BKISHHB, designed by PEI Architects, decorative lighting fixtures play a pivotal role — serving as a crucial bridge balancing the crisp, clean lines of modern architecture with traditional Islamic aesthetics.
Rather than relying on overly intricate or literal historic motifs, the design team extracted geometric forms, paired rich material textures, and utilised patterned shadow projections to create a custom hospitality-grade decorative lighting scheme that instills a profound sense of ritual.
"Geometric forms, rich material textures, and patterned shadow projections — a lighting scheme that instills a profound sense of ritual."
Suspended from the soaring ceilings of the central atrium and main VIP reception lounges, these monumental custom chandeliers are directly inspired by the traditional Islamic eight-pointed star motif — the Rub el Hizb.
Materiality: Refined brushed brass and chemical-oxidized metals with a waxed oil-rubbed bronze finish, integrated with matte frosted pressed glass blocks for soft, beautifully refracted light output.
Visual Impact: When illuminated, geometric silhouettes are cast across ceilings and surfaces — reinterpreting traditional Islamic Muqarnas ceiling geometry through a contemporary lens of light and shadow.
Along the main corridors connecting permanent galleries, ceremonial ramps, and VIP private quarters, custom decorative sconces are arranged in rhythmic, calculated intervals — sculpting light rather than merely providing wayfinding.
Light Formulation: Bi-directional up-and-down lighting with precision laser-cut metal plates patterned after traditional Islamic Jali latticework and organic arabesque vines.
Effect: Light bleeds softly through perforations, draping stone walls in elongated silk-textured gradients that make expansive corridors feel deep, intimate, and sacred.
Complementing Brunei's contemporary international profile, the lighting in corporate offices and public reception lounges adopts a modern minimalist aesthetic — sleek tubular linear profiles and ring pendants in deliberate dialogue with high-translucency glass bridges and monolithic marble columns.
Technical Execution: Ultra-high-end artisan manufacturing standards throughout — from precision-engineered load-bearing threaded pipe connectors to hand-finished metal surfaces.
Dialogue: Structural simplicity at macro scale; jewellery-grade detail at close inspection — a signature of the Shinelux approach to institutional lighting.
In a high-tier museum environment, decorative lighting can introduce stray glare that disrupts delicate gallery atmospheres. BKISHHB resolves this through a strict separation of decorative and functional illumination.
Separation of Decor and Function: Chandeliers and sconces operate at incredibly soft lumen outputs (2700K–3000K) to mimic the amber glow of historical oil lamps or candlelight — mood, not task.
Concealed Optical Support: High-CRI, narrow-beam, deeply recessed architectural downlights operate invisibly alongside decorative fixtures, ensuring immaculate, glare-free gallery illumination.
These massive hanging sculptures draw direct formal inspiration from the Rub el Hizb — the traditional Islamic eight-pointed star. Suspended from the soaring atrium ceiling, they are as significant as fine art installations as they are luminaires.
Structural framing in refined brushed brass and chemical-oxidized metal — a deeply rich, waxed oil-rubbed bronze finish
Artisanal matte frosted pressed glass blocks integrated into the frame ensure softly diffused, beautifully refracted output
When lit, geometric silhouettes reinterpret classical Muqarnas ceiling geometry through a contemporary shadow-play lens
Arranged at rhythmic, calculated intervals along the main gallery corridors and ceremonial ramps, these sconces are designed not for ambient wayfinding, but for sculpting light forms that imbue every transitional space with a feeling of quiet sacredness.
Semi-shielded metal housings with precision laser-cut Jali latticework and arabesque vine perforations
Bi-directional up-and-down lighting washes stone walls in elongated, silk-textured gradient pools
Expansive corridors rendered deep, intimate, and sacred through patterned shadow projection alone
The lighting in corporate offices and public reception lounges leans toward a modern, minimalist aesthetic — sleek tubular linear profiles and ring pendants that complement Brunei's contemporary international institutional profile.
Structural simplicity at every silhouette, yet ultra-high-end artisan manufacturing standards at every joint and surface
Precision hand-finished metal surfaces in deliberate dialogue with the building's high-translucency glass bridges and monolithic marble columns
Engineered load-bearing threaded pipe connectors designed to the same specification as the structural architecture itself
In a high-tier institutional environment, decorative lighting can easily introduce stray glare that disrupts delicate gallery atmospheres. BKISHHB addresses this through a strict separation of decorative and functional illumination — a dual system where beauty and precision operate in parallel, invisibly.
The primary role of the chandeliers and decorative sconces is to establish spatial mood and visual focal points. Their internal light sources are dialled down to a soft, incredibly warm output — mimicking the amber glow of historical oil lamps or candlelight.
While a space may visually appear to be illuminated entirely by an iconic chandelier, it is secretly supported by high-CRI, narrow-beam, deeply recessed architectural downlights — ensuring perfectly crisp, glare-free, and immaculately lit gallery volumes.
